Department of Biological Sciences

(i)  BOTANY (B. Sc. degree, Duration: 4 years)

Requirements: Candidates must in addition to Faculty requirements possess credit passes in Biology, Chemistry and one (1) other Science subjects from Physics, Agricultural Science, Technical drawing or Geography.
Description: Modern botany is a broad multidisciplinary study of plant science with inputs from most other areas of science and technology. It includes the study of plant structure, growth and differentiation, reproduction, biochemistry, evolutionary relationships and taxonomy. The student will be exposed to new plant science techniques such as molecular genetics, genomics and DNA sequences to classify plants more accurately and diverse applications in providing staple foods and textiles in modern horticulture, agriculture and environmental management.
Graduates of Botany may choose careers in agriculture and research institutions, forestry, conservation and wild life management, wood technology and industries such as sugar, rubber, paper pulp, fertilizer and oil (vegetable and minerals) as well as teaching in colleges and universities, etc

(ii)  ZOOLOGY (B.Sc. Degree, Duration: 4 years)

Requirements: Candidates must in addition to Faculty requirements possess credit passes in Biology, Chemistry and one (1) other Science subjects from Physics, Agricultural Science, Technical drawing or Geography.
Description: Zoology is the branch of biology that studies the structure, evolution, classification, habits and distribution of all animals both living and extinct and how they interact with their ecosystems. While the study of animal life is ancient, its scientific incarnation is modern and it deals with fields as diverse as anatomy, physiology, histology, and embryology.
Graduates from Department of Zoology may find employment in specialized sectors of national and global economy. Some of these include biomedical sectors such as public health facilities in entomology, parasitology, pharmaceutical companies, diseases vector control departments, wild life and games resorts, zoological parks, museums of natural history, etc.

(iii)  BIOCHEMISTRY (B. Sc. Degree, Duration: 4 years)

Requirements: Candidates must in addition to Faculty requirements possess credit passes in Biology, Chemistry and any other Science subjects from Physics, Agricultural Science, Technical drawing or Geography.
Description: Biochemistry studies chemical processes within and relating to living organisms. Candidates will be exposed to the structures, functions, and interactions of biological macromolecules such as lipids, proteins, nucleic acids and carbohydrates which provide the structure of cells and perform many of the functions associated with life. Students will be exposed to study of molecular mechanisms by which genetic information encoded in DNA is able to result in processes of life. Most findings in biochemistry are applied primarily in medicine, nutrition and agriculture.
Graduates of biochemistry will find employment in food and beverage industries, and job prospects in areas such as Forensic analysis, drug manufacturing, pharmaceutical industries etc. A degree in biochemistry is also a stepping stone to diverse career opportunities.
